Frank Wakelkamp


Cellist, Gambist, Teacher, Researcher and Editor

Frank Wakelkamp studied "modern" cello at the Conservatory of Utrecht in The Netherlands, where he was a student of Dmitri Ferschman and Maarten Mostert. He attended masterclasses with Frans Brüggen, Heinrich Schiff and Christophe Coin. He graduated in Baroque Cello performance, working with Viola de Hoog.
As an orchestral musician he has worked with Anima Eterna, Concerto d'Amsterdam, Currende, Les Musiciens du Louvre and Al Ayre Español. He has worked with conductors Jos van Immerseel, Eduardo Lopez Banzo, Erik van Nevel, Ton Koopman and Klaas Stok. Frank recorded with the Holland Boys Choir as a continuo cellist playing the piccolo cello of, amongst other things the 200 religious Bach cantatas.
Following this he recorded a solo-cd of cello sonatas by the Dutch baroque composer Jacob Klein, published by Muziekgroep Nederland (CV 125). Prior to this he did extensive musicological research into the relatively unknown Jacob Klein.
Frank Wakelkamp is a chamber musician with Camerata 1800, The Great Charm, La Récolte and other
impromptu ensembles, and also performs as a soloist. In 1996 his trio, Trio Eroica won the Musica Antiqua contest in Bruges with special praise from the jury and the brTN3Radio Award.
In June 2002 he made his debut on the viola da gamba and in 2003 for the first time was soloist in Bach's Matthew Passion. In 2005 he started working on the first Urtext edition of among other things Boccherini's cello sonatas.
In 2007 he gave a conference and a masterclass at the Conservatory of Utrecht on musicological research and Jacob Klein's cello sonatas.
Since 2009 he has been teaching baroque cello at Fontys Hogeschool in Tilburg (NL)
