Adriano Jordão

Adriano Jordão was born in Angola in 1946.
He studied in Portugal with Helena Sá e Costa and other teachers. In 1967, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation offered him a grant, which allowed him to complete a year of advanced studies in the United States of America. In 1969, after completing the advanced course of the National Conservatory of Lisbon with the highest distinction, in Helena Matos class, he continued to study in Paris, under the guidance of Yvonne Lefébure.

He won awards in several Portuguese and international competitions, including the 1st Prize in the Debussy International Competition in France.

The artistic career of Adriano Jordão has taken him throughout Europe, North and South America, as well as Africa and Asia.
After his American début in the USA (with the Kingsport Symphony in the Tennessee) he performed in San Francisco, Washington, Boston and New York, at the Lincoln Center (with the New Orchestra of Boston under David Epstein) at Carnegie Hall (with the Queen’s Symphony under John Neschling) and also in Canada.

His concerts in Brazil, in all major venues, in Mexico, Venezuela, Paraguay, as in Africa (Senegal, Cabo Verde, Angola and Mozambique) or in Asia (India, Thailand, China, Korea, Japan) achieved always great success. Adriano Jordão also appeared, besides of course Portugal, in Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, Finland, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Turkey.

He has collaborated with all the best Portuguese conductors as well as with internationally renowned conductors such as Alain Lombard, Sandor Végh, Claudio Scimone, Van Remoortel, Richard Treiber, Christian Mandeal, Horia Andreescu, David Epstein, Peter Feranec, Nicholas Kremmer, Nicholas Braithwake including also several Chinese maestros such as Muhai Tang, Yuan Fang or Chen Zou Huang.

In love with the human voice, he collaborated with superstars such as Ileana Cotrubas, Peter Schreier, Teresa Berganza, Katia Ricciarelli, Julia Hamari, Lella Cuberli or Alfredo Kraus.

He was the founder and artistic director of the Macao International Music Festival for the first five years, artistic director of the Casa de Mateus Festival and the Azores Festival in all their editions, and also artistic director of the Sintra Music Festival.

He has a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon, he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government as well as the Medal of Merit of the Sovereign Order of Malta, among other distinctions. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Brasilia.

From 2004 to 2011, he was Cultural Counselor of Portugal in Brazil, and from 2013 to 2016, member of the board of administrators of Opart, the body managing the National Opera House and the Ballet of Portugal.

In October 2016, he traveled to Macao, where he was invited by the government of Macao to participate in the 30th edition of the Macao International Music Festival, a festival he founded in 1986, and opened the festival with a recital to commemorate his fifty years of artistic career.

In 2017, he began a tour with the Quarteto Arabesco in various cities in Portugal and performed in recital and with orchestra in Thailand, Morocco, Brazil, and Istanbul at the invitation of the United Nations commemorating International Women’s Day.
In Portugal, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, he toured extensively with the Gulbenkian Choir, where he performed as soloist at Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, conducted by maestro Michel Corboz.

In 2018, he returned to Brazil and Morocco, in addition to his presence in several festivals in Portugal.
The year 2019 began with concerts in Macau /China, followed by several concerts and recitals in Portugal, concerts in Brazil in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia with orchestra, Morocco, among other countries, to celebrate his fifty years of international career.

In addition to his activity as a pianist, Adriano has been the artistic director of the Mafra Music International Festival since 2016.
